Social media. We all love it. Many of us are consumed by it. As part of my 4 words for 2014, I decided to “clean” up my social media.
Facebook – For me, this is the best way to stay up to date on what is happening with friends & family. I love the pictures from vacations and the funny stories about my friend’s kids. Things got out of hand when everyone was friending any person that they had ever had contact with in their life. Get rid of people that drive you crazy. My guidelines for cleaning out my friend list were simple – if I saw you today, would I come over and say hi? No? Then, we probably don’t need to be friends on the internet. The book will always be my first internet love and when things like the picture below show up on my newsfeed, I fall in love again.
Twitter – I love finding new people to follow on Twitter, so I’m always quick to add people. The problem was that I never unfollowed anyone. Sorry, but I get super annoyed when all you tweet about is giveaways. I need some substance to stick around. When you’re following too many people, you don’t see the gems that twitter throws your way sometimes. It was time to clean up that list a little bit, so I unfollowed the people that I’ve never seen a tweet from and the people that I didn’t recognize at all.

Pinterest – I finally organized my boards better and deleted some duplicates and things that were cluttering up my fake online life. That’s the extent of my “clean up” because I’m not unfollowing anyone. I love spending hours on this website.
Gmail – UNSUBSCRIBE. Do it now and do it again next week and every time you get something you don’t read. I had a serious email problem and I was so worried that if I unsubscribed from something, I might miss the best sale in the entire world. But, I did it cold turkey. I unsubscribed from everything. It feels amazing. It felt even better when I didn’t miss the 2 for $22 candle sale this weekend (thanks Twitter.)

I’ve also learned what life is like with Buffer, IFTTT and dropbox. If you don’t use those, go make that happen right now.
Last, but not least, I cleaned up my blog. I got organized. I spent much of my lazy Saturday changing the way this all looks. I might have broken a few things, but I learned a lot. I understand now why we pay people to design for us, but I did it and I’m happy with how it turned out.
What tips do you have for keeping your internet life clean? Do you feel like your email owns you?
YES to the unsubscribe thing! I have all of my shopping/sale emails going to a different email account so I can quickly scroll through them or just delete them without being tempted! I love twitter & am definitely getting into using it more but sometimes I'm like, I really need to just put my phone away and be present in the moment.
Is it bad that I've started to unfriend people on their birthdays because I forget I'm even friends with them until they pop up on the side? And when I realize I haven't talked to them in at least 10 years…yep- unfriend!
I love this advice! I keep saying I need to clean up my FB page, but I just haven't taken the time to do it. Maybe today!
i just did a mass unfriending of my facebook over the weekend and got rid of over 100 people. if i haven't seen or talked to you in the last 10yrs, i doubt facebook will change that, byyyeeee!!!!!! same with twitter!

I sooo need to do this! I keep saying it, but haven't done it like I have said I will. I love the FB example…I have some "friends" from FB that I was never really friends with in high school, and occasionally I do see them…and avoid like the plague! Haha…also what are Buffer, IFTTT? LOL..
First of all I LOVE the way your bloggy is looking. Just lovely! I agree with unfriending and unfollowing. I've had to do it a few times recently. If all you ever tweet is retweets and contest entries? No thank you.
Nothing makes me happier than unsubscribing from all the junk emails that I get! My wallet and bank account also thank me as well 😉
I love doing a good FB purge every now and then. Anyone who complains too much… unfriend. Anyone who posts 34872634876 articles a day why being a parent is the best thing in the world (because clearly they need their decision validated)… unfriend. It feels so good!
Your blog looks faboosh!
I love fb friend deleting sprees. Make you feel so much lighter. Also, you should be so SO proud of your new design because it looks perfect!
Cleaning up social media is a must. I used to feel bad un-friending people on facebook or Instagram but it's true sometimes people just need to go!
I have not gone on a good deleting spree since the last election 😉 but maybe it's time…
Good call on unsubscribing from as many newsletters as possible! I recently did that and feel much more FREE from email clutter. Also, I should totally adopt your thoughts with Facebook friends… There are totally people I'm friends with on Facebook that I wouldn't go out of my way to say hello to in real life. So, so wrong!
I am stupid and follow people on Twitter for giveaways and then get really annoyed. Constant complaints, giveaways, Bible verses (ugh), etc etc = unfriend. Unfriending people on Facebook is so liberating too.
Although, I notice sometimes when my Twitter followers go down and I always wonder what tweet was the breaking point to make someone unfollow me. I, of course, could NEVER imagine being annoying on Twitter and making someone want to unfollow, lol.
These are all such wonderful ideas. I cleaned up FB by deleting it altogether. I completely agree with the Twitter dilemma. I too, try not to follow too many people because then I never have time to catch up and really appreciate the content.
Now I'm off to clean my Gmail….unsubscribing!

Loooove your new blog design! Good job!
We all get sucked into social media but it's also a great way to promote our blogs. Also, use Twitter to promote your blog posts and use hashtags – it works!
I'm so behind on reading = But I finally just caught up on stalking you and I'm SO proud you did your new design by yourself! You go girl!! Also, I feel you on 'digital decluttering' …I've been doing a lot of that lately too!
Completely agree to all of this. Need to weed out my "non-friends" on Facebook, quit following bogus Tweeters, organize my Pinterest boards, unsubscribe to many sites…and finally–dive in to to the blog world! Big shout out to YOU for helping me!! XO
