I could also title this post “I’m Emotionally Unstable.” It was a rough weekend. Rough doesn’t even really describe it. Friday night, we had to bring Lola into the emergency vet because of pale gums and within a few hours, they found the same aggressive stomach cancer that Quincy had and her mass had ruptured and was bleeding. We were destroyed. We had to say our goodbyes in the middle of the night and it was devastating.
Losing both of our dogs in the last year has been just heart wrenching. Once we lost Quincy, we moved schedules around to try and be home with Lola as much as possible. Now, our house is empty and quiet, so we are doing everything possible to stay out of our house.
This weekend, we did our best to entertain ourselves outside of our house. We tried hiking on Saturday and got attacked by giant flies. We saw a movie in the theater, went to a friend’s for dinner and games and tried a new brewery. After exhausting our contact lists yesterday afternoon looking for distractions, I remembered that Kacey Musgraves was in town opening for one of the One Direction kids. We found cheap tickets from someone trying to get rid of them last minute and headed to St. Paul.
Kacey Musgraves was wonderful, but it was obvious that I should not have been in public. I cried uncontrollably during 3 different songs. Once Harry Styles took the stage, I was an emotional wreck and then all the girls in the stadium starting screaming and I wasn’t sure I should stay for more.
Let me tell you something I learned. The next generation isn’t filled with a bunch of assholes. Every time I turn the news on, I get raging pissed, but maybe I just need to spend more time with younger people. While these girls screamed loudly, they also held up signs showing support for Black Lives Matters, waving rainbow flags and just showed non stop love and kindness to one another. They offered to take pictures for others, chatted in between acts with strangers and didn’t show asshole behavior like I see at so many other huge events.
We stayed until his main set wrapped up and I was totally entertained. We had only heard 2 songs before – one on the radio and the other was a Fleetwood Mac cover. But I guess I’m a Harry Styles fan now.
I’d also like to thank those people that saw my Instagram post and reached out about Lola. We have been working on filling up our weekends with things that will keep us out of our house, but no matter how busy, it just takes time to turn the tears into smiles. I just keep reminding myself how lucky we were to be able to love two creatures as much as we did.
